The elementary school counseling program supports all students in developing the skills and mindsets they need to be successful academically, socially, and in a future career. All K-6 students participate in classroom lessons with the school counselor. These lessons help students understand their feelings, maintain friendships, solve problems respectfully, and develop career awareness.
School counselors also offer three types of counseling to students who are experiencing barriers to their success at school: group counseling, individual counseling, and check-ins. Groups are formed with similar-aged peers based on need and typically last 6-8 weeks. Individual counseling provides targeted, time-limited support when a student is going through a hard time. Check-in meetings are a short and sweet way for students to connect with the school counselor at regular intervals. Students can also request to see the school counselor as needed. All school counseling interventions are designed to be faded over time.
Families of students requiring long-term support with mental health conditions or other challenges in personal or family life can contact the school counselor for help finding an appropriate provider. Work with a school counselor is not a replacement for therapy or treatment. The school district works with a therapy agency to provide on-site professional counseling during the school day, although slots are limited. Families should speak with potential providers about their options for payment, care settings available (in-person or virtual), and approach to counseling before making a decision.
Students working with the school counselor can expect to have their privacy respected, within the limits of confidentiality (meaning that some information must be shared when the student or someone else is in danger). Families can expect updates on their students’ progress and prompt communication if the counselor has concerns for the child’s wellbeing. The school counseling program supports the school’s mission, vision, and strategic planning for student success, contributing to a positive school climate that embraces all students and families.
