As the Hornets Cross Country team is just past the halfway point of the season, the runners are off to a strong start with four team wins and two second-place finishes. With hopes for a trip to state, the team of 11 has pushed themselves to reach and surpass their goals. Last year's cross-country season was cut short when the Hornets placed seventh at Sectionals, forcing them to work harder this season than ever before. Practices entail 70-minute runs, sprints, and whole-team conditioning while also occasionally making time for team-bonding activities like swimming. This year, Mr. Dan Yeager has returned as the head coach with Mrs. Kat Waldera as the assistant coach; the team also welcomed Mr. Josiah Yeager as the middle school coach. Mr. Dan Yeager said, “It’s rewarding to share this experience with him [Josiah] and to be able to build something together for the program.” All three coaches share an attitude of growing as a team, and having leaders who dedicate themselves to personal growth pushes the athletes to be better on and off the course. With their recent race at Neillsville marking the halfway point of the season, the Hornet runners will continue to push towards victory.
