The school board purchased 3.5 acres north of Stanley Street for $2,500 for additional playground area and a future building site.  Part of the area was used for a practice football field and was commonly known to all students as the "goat pasture".  Purchase of the Jake Rice property gave the school access to all property between Stanley Street and Mills Street from Highway 27 west to the alley east of Main Street.  Most of the 1961 high school was built on this property.
