School bus drivers must have an up-to-date Commercial Driver’s License with a School Bus certification. In order to hold a CDL, drivers must follow the requirements. These include a physical every 2 years, random drug and alcohol tests, and yearly background checks of their driving record.
Before drivers can leave for their route, they have to do a pre-trip inspection. When doing this they need to make sure the bus and all equipment is operating properly. Drivers are also subject to randomly selected spot inspections by the Department of Transportation, where they need to meet all codes. The D.O.T also does annual inspection of every school bus the district has.
